The role of a Mentor in the Endemolshine’s Accelerated Training Program is to provide guidance and support to recent trainees transitioning from Phase 1, which involves theory and practical training, to Phase 2, where they receive on-the-job mentoring while working on their first episode projects. Mentors are highly skilled and experienced Editors & Post Producers who are well-versed in the specific format they are mentoring.
As Mentors, they assist the trainees in crafting compelling narratives, helping them determine the best storytelling approach, whether starting with actuality footage or interviews, and considering other creative aspects.
Throughout the trainees' decision-making process and story construction, the Mentor takes on a supportive role, ensuring that the created story is clear and understandable. They encourage the trainees to ask core questions about characters, their desires, needs, and internal conflicts, as well as how these conflicts intersect with the external world. Additionally, the Mentor assists in analysing character development and the impact of decisions on other characters in the story.
Effective time management is crucial in this role, and the Mentor guides the trainees in understanding the scheduled timeline and key screening dates. They work closely with the trainees to establish attainable milestones each week to meet the scheduled screening dates. The Mentor also provides strategies for compartmentalizing work, helping the trainees start without feeling overwhelmed, and staying organized during the production process.
Mentor support extends to preparing the trainees for the screening process and its expectations. This includes teaching them how to navigate screenings efficiently and take insightful notes, which prove essential during the editing and post-production phases.
Throughout the entire process, the Mentor attends all screenings alongside the trainees, offering valuable guidance in interpreting feedback provided by other production team members. They help the trainees comprehend the reasoning behind the notes and how to effectively implement them to enhance the final product.
